What Is Yorkshire Pudding?

I thought I better run through what Yorkshire puddings are, after all Google is loaded with suggestions that a Yorkshire pud is a dessert!

Yorkshire pudding is the hero of roast beef. Its unheard of to enjoy a roast beef dinner without the pudding. It is made like a pancake batter and then when they come out of the air fryer, they have risen up at the sides and because of their great shape you can pour the gravy over them.

Yorkshire puddings also have a savoury taste because of the beef drippings used to make them.

What Is Yorkshire Pudding Batter Made Of?

A traditional Yorkshire pudding batter is made of four ingredients. Plain flour, eggs, beef dripping and milk. Because of its short list of ingredients it was a favourite during WW2 and the UK rationing era.

Can I Use Self Raising Flour Instead Of Plain For Yorkshire Puddings?

We experimented with several different Yorkshire pudding recipes to get the right one for the air fryer and also tried self raising flour vs plain flour.

What we found is that self raising Yorkshire puddings tasted pretty awful.

Making Yorkshire puddings with self raising flour means that they will rise way too much and they become cake like and heavy and feel like you have added too many eggs.

Here are our Yorkshire puddings side by side and you can see the difference in how they look, yet apart from the change in using self raising vs plain flour the recipe is the same.

What Oil For Yorkshire Puddings?

The best oil for Yorkshire puddings is of course beef dripping. It’s the traditional old fashioned way that Yorkshire puddings are cooked in sizzling beef drippings. And you can tell the difference and they are never as good when you use a different oil.

Can You Use Goose Fat For Yorkshire Puddings?

The next question often to be asked, is instead of beef drippings can you use goose fat and of course the answer is YES.

When we lived in Portugal we couldn’t get beef drippings and would use the leftover fat of either goose fat or duck fat and they also tasted good.

So if you want to mix it up then feel free to make goose fat Yorkshire pudding and of course, don’t forget to save some and use them on our air fryer duck fat roast potatoes.

You can also use extra virgin olive oil for your Yorkshire puds if you are looking for a vegetarian option.

Is Pancake Mix The Same As Yorkshire Pudding Mix?

Yes, Yorkshire pudding mix and pancake mix are the same thing. Though the quantities are slightly different.

The big major difference between pancake mix and Yorkshires is that Yorkshires use beef dripping, and they are cooked in little tins rather than in a frying pan.

3 Egg Yorkshire Pudding

It has often been suggested, that to make the best Yorkshire puddings that you must add 3 eggs.

We tried making Yorkshire puddings in the air fryer with 3 eggs and found that it was really doughy, and it also rises too much in the air fryer that it burnt the top of the Yorkshire pudding like you see here.

Yorkshire Pudding Ingredients

Oil – You will need some oil that you can get sizzling in the air fryer first, before adding in the Yorkshire pudding batter. We recommend beef dripping for this. But you can sub for olive oil to make vegetarian or goose or duck fat.

Flour – Its important for the flour that you use a quality plain flour. We use Bero as we find we get the best results with it.

Eggs – We also recommend adding in JUST one egg. The air fryer helps them rise perfectly with 1 egg and they stop having that doughy, too many eggs added problem.

Milk – You will also need some milk. We recommend for the best batter for Yorkshire puds that you use semi skimmed milk.

Then for seasoning your homemade Yorkshire pudding we recommend keeping it simple with salt and pepper.

Then for the kitchen gadgets that we have used in this air fryer Yorkshire pudding UK recipe it has been our Philips Air Fryer. We recommend this one and its wonderful for many types of air fryer recipes.

Also, we used some Yorkshire pudding tins. We recommend these ones, but you can pick them up from most supermarkets too.

Plus, we recommend you head over to our air fryer recipes category as we have more than 500 tried and tested air fryer recipes and have been air frying for 10 years.

How To Cook Yorkshire Pudding In Air Fryer?

Recipe This | Air Fryer Yorkshire Pudding (8)
  • Batter. Start by making the batter. Because Yorkshire pudding batter must sit for a while, its best to do this process first. Begin with flour in a bowl, crack an egg into the centre and then slowly mix with a fork, add the milk a little at a time until you have a yorkie pudding batter. Then mix in salt and pepper. Let it sit.
  • Sizzle. Next load the beef dripping into pudding tins and then place in the air fryer. Air fry for 10 minutes at 200c/400f.
  • Quickly. Then quickly pour the Yorkshire pudding batter into each of the pudding tins and then place the air fryer basket back in.
  • Cook. Air fry Yorkshire puddings for 10 minutes, turn over with tongs and air fry for a final 5 minutes before serving.

And I am sure you can see now how easy this Yorkshire pudding in air fryer recipe is and why you should be doing it too!

How Long Do Yorkshire Puddings Take To Cook?

Making a Yorkshire pudding in the air fryer takes JUST 15 minutes to cook, plus the time taken to heat up the beef dripping first, taking it to a total cook time of 25 minutes.

How Long To Heat Oil For Yorkshire Puddings?

We recommend heating the beef dripping in the Yorkshire pudding tins for 10 minutes prior to cooking the Yorkshires.

This allows the air fryer to warm up to the point of the oil sizzling in the pudding tins just like they do in the oven.

What Temperature For Yorkshire Puddings?

The ideal temp for Yorkshire pudding in the air fryer is 200c/400f. We use this for both heating up the beef dripping and also for cooking the Yorkshire puddings.

Any less and you wont get the golden texture on them.

Can You Freeze Yorkshire Puddings?

Yes, you can freeze Yorkshire puddings, but in our Yorkshire home, we fight over the last one, so never any left to put in the freezer. Are you the same and never have any left too?

Can You Reheat Yorkshire Puddings?

Yes, you sure can reheat Yorkshire puddings in the air fryer and we have done it a few times now. You can also reheat that little pot of gravy too.

Or another idea is to reheat frozen giant Yorkshire puddings and then wrap them up and make into delicious Yorkshire pudding wraps.

What Is The Secret To Good Yorkshire Pudding?

The secret to best Yorkshire pudding UK recipe is:

1) Let the batter sit for 20 minutes before you cook it. This allows it to expand and will create a better risen Yorkshire pudding.

2) Is to not add too many eggs. Add too many eggs and you will have a doughy texture.

3) To use beef dripping. It produces the best tasting Yorkshire puds.

4) To make sure you are fast when pouring the batter into the beef dripping as you don’t want the air fryer to cool down.

Notes

Oil. It is traditional to make yorkshire puddings with beef dripping and it makes a big difference to the taste. However, if you can’t source beef dripping you can swap it for lard or vegetable oil.

Tins. We recommend using pudding tins rather than ramekins or silicone. It creates much better air fryer Yorkshires.
