A historic severe weather outbreak occurred on Tuesday, April 2nd, 2024, across the NWS Charleston, WV County Warning Area with 17 confirmed tornadoes and over 100 locations that experienced non-tornadic wind damage.

The 17 confirmed tornadoes arethe most tornadoes for any calendar day and eventon record for the NWS Charleston County Warning Area (49 counties in Ohio, Kentucky, Virginia and West Virginia). The previous record was 6 tornadoes on April 4, 1974. To further put this number into perspective, the previous record number of tornadoes for an entire calendar year over the NWS Charleston County Warning Area was 11 set in 1980, and it took 7 different days with tornadoes to reach that number!

Ten tornadoes have been confirmed inthe state of West Virginia on April 2, 2024. This sets a state record for the most tornadoes observed on any calendar day. The previous record was 7 set both on April 4, 1974 and June 2, 1998.

The tornado touched down west of Mallard Rd then traveled eastward along Mallard Rd causing considerable and significant tree damage with hundreds of hardwood trees uprooted and snapped. Several homes were damaged by trees or had wind damage along Mallard Rd, including one home that had significant roof damage.

The tornado continued eastward crossing Lookout Rd and US 60. The tornado reached peak width of 325 yards here and peak wind speeds were likely reached just west of Lookout Road where tree damage indicated wind speeds estimated at 130 mph. The tornado damaged or destroyed several homes and businesses along US 60. One home was shifted several feet off its foundation and the metal roof was tossed approximately 350 yards to the tree line across US 60.

The tornado continued east of US 60 with a path of tree damage noted for another mile before the tornado lifted.

Thanks to the Nuttall Volunteer Fire Department for their generosity and assistance with the damage survey. Thanks also to the West Virginia Civil Air Patrol for aerial surveys of the track which allowed for a better assessment of the beginning point and ending point of this tornado track.

This was a non-continuous path of with three notable damage locations. Significantconverging tree damage was observed along Hidden Pines Lane in Cross Lanes where several large and healthy softwood trees were snapped at their bases along with uprooting of many large hardwood trees. Minor damage to homes was noted adjacent of this location along Hidden Cove.The second location where significant converging tree damage wasobserved was along a narrow stretch of the 5000 block Rocky Fork Road, near Tyler Mountain Memory Gardens, where a utility pole was snapped at the base along with several uprooted mixed hardwood and softwood trees. This damage extended to a subdivision on Lynn Oak Drive where several large softwood and hardwood trees were either snapped or uprooted. This included a large hardwood tree that fell on a home, which resulted in significant damage to the second story; a resident`s john boat and camper were also flipped over and crushed by large trees in this area.The final location where damage was noted occurred just south of the community of Wallace, West Virginia along the 4000 block of Sissonville Drive and Whittington Road. This is where several large softwood trees were either snapped or uprooted. In addition, sporadic tree damage was noted just of the overall track, resulting from straight line winds.

Significant uprooting of hardwood trees oriented in anorth- northeast direction was observed along City Park Drive. Onthe adjacent side of the road there were a mixture of hard andsoftwood trees that were either uprooted or snapped, oriented in asoutheast direction indicating a clear converging damage swath.Based on a combination of drone footage and ground surveys it wasdetermined that the tornado skipped eastward, embedded in anlarger swath of straight-line wind damage, from Saint Albans toJefferson to Dunbar and ending in the Roxalana area. This was anon-continuous path with several noted areas of concentrateddamage.In Saint Albans, several homes in the area just west ofCunningham Memorial Park were damaged from fallen hardwood andsoftwood trees of decent size and health. One home was missing asection of wall on the east side of the structure. Multiple homesin the area of Hughes Drive, Lotus Road, and Squires Drivereceived damage from mixed hardwood and softwood trees that havefallen. Some of the trees were rather large and healthy.In Jefferson, several trees of mixed hardwood and softwood alongMacCorkle Avenue, Kanawha Terrace, Hampshire Drive, and CampbellLane were uprooted or snapped with some falling on homes. Dronefootage showed a path of convergent tree damage descending a hilland crossing Rt. 60 in Jefferson where the roof was blown off of ahome.In Dunbar, several trees around Dutch Hollow, Grandview, and intoRoxalana Road were either snapped or uprooted with some sidingand shingle damage noted to several homes and apartment buildings.A large billboard on Fairlawn Avenue, next to a restaurant andInterstate 64, was knocked over onto a car.Thanks to the South Charleston Fire Department for use of theirdrone and Kanawha County Emergency Management for their assistancewith this survey.

From drone footage, it was apparent that thismicroburst descended into the north/south oriented valley at 5thStreet Road near Woodhaven Drive. Tree and structural damage inthis valley showed strong rotation with damage consistent with anEF1 tornado. Several structures were damaged or destroyed andextensive tree damage occurred. Thiswas a non-continuous track with several notable damage locations.A narrow concentrated area of hardwood tree damage was noted on ahilltop along Viewpoint Lane. Several of the trees were eithersnapped or uprooted in a converging pattern and continuedsoutheast along Estate Drive.Significant mixed hardwood and softwood tree damage was observedalong Guyan River Road with most of intense damage along the banksof the Guyandotte River. Numerous large hardwood and softwood treeswere either snapped or uprooted. Damage to a mobile home occurreddue to a large fallen tree. In addition, damage to the roof of anapartment complex on the other side of the river on Beech Driveoccurred from a fallen tree. This section of the track is wherethe maximum winds are believed to have occurred.The tornado path continued eastward with a distinct damage swath ofhardwood trees was noted along Merritts Creek Road. Large hardwoodtrees were either snapped or uprooted in a converging pattern. A smallmobile office unit was blown in the opposite direction of the orientationof the tree damage. It is here where the tornado reached is maximum widthas it entered a valley. Tree damage continued east up the ridgetop alongBig Ben Bowen Highway before ending along Wildcat Road. The tornado isbelieved to have lifted before reaching the Barboursville mall and this issupported by radar. This tornado, as with many of the others on this day,stayed mainly in the treetops with little in the way of property damageobserved.Of note, rear flank downdraft wind damage occurred east and southeastof the tornado path, where a concrete block wall attached to theexterior of the mall was blown apart to the northeast. In addition,part of the roof of a business just east of the mall was lifted andblown to the northeast as well. Finally, scattered tree damage wasobserved on both sides of Interstate 64 east of the mall, with ageneral orientation to the northeast.

Thetornado then likely tracked along the river before intersectingland again on the Kentucky side and causing roof and tree damageto several homes along Calumet Drive.The tornado finally crossed the river and impacted a campgroundon the Ohio side at Hanging Rock. More significant damage wasnoted here as several travel trailers were overturned, the roofwas blown off of the Laidback Bar and significant tree damage wasnoted in the adjacent camping area. Drone footage showed camperstossed in a counter-clockwise motion and some convergence in thetree damage. A salt storage dome was also destroyed in this areacausing significant injury to an employee.The tornado continued to track eastward, damaging a few homes anddamaging the roof and ballfields at Ironton Middle School. Thetornado weakened but continued to cause some sporadic damage tohomes all the way to the Storms Creek Flood Wall.Thanks to Greenup County Emergency Management, Greenup FireDepartment, Lawrence County Emergency Management, the City ofIronton and Ohio Emergency Management Agency for their assistancewith the damage survey. There was a concentrated swath ofsignificant hardwood tree damage observed along Scottown-LectaRoad just southeast of Timber Ridge Lake with several largehardwoods either snapped or uprooted. This damage was consistentwith a converging tornadic damage signature. The begin and endpath are unknown given the rural area with which the tornadocrossed and lack of a road network within the theoretical path.In addition, this tornado may be an extension of the one whichwas observed in Aid.

The tornado continued northeast, blowing the roof off oftwo homes and another structure and rolling a travel trailer nearwhere it crossed State Route 141. The last noted damage was sometin panels blown up on a barn roof shortly after the tornadocrossed State Route 141.An EMS employee stationed at the nearby Lawrence County EMSStation 5 witnessed the tornado as it traveled across the field infront of the station.Some minor wind damage, not likely associated with the tornado,occurred at the Symmes Valley High School.Thanks to the Aid Township Volunteer Fire Department and LawrenceCounty Emergency Management for assistance with the survey.

Initial damagewas observed along Hurricane Creek Road, just north of theintersection with Sugar Camp Road south of Fraziers Bottom.Scattered tree damage was observed, mainly large limbs ofhardwood trees with a few uprooted trees noted. There was aslight converging signature observed. More significant hardwoodtree damage was observed along State Route 34 south of Winfieldwith a concentrated area of hardwoods either snapped or uprootedwith a more pronounced tornadic damage signature. Additionalconcentrated tree damage occurred along State Route 817 in theShawnee Estates area across from Bancroft. Here, a narrow damageswath of several mixed hardwood and softwood trees were eithersnapped or uprooted which continued eastward along Cannery Lane.A converging damage path was noted. The tornado appeared to be inthe treetops with only minor property damage observed. Thetornado lifted just after crossing the Kanawha River.

This signature became moreapparent to the northeast along Cross Creek Road where severalmixed softwood and hardwood trees were observed either uprootedor snapped. The tornado appeared to stay in the treetops with noproperty damage observed. The tornado quickly lifted along CrossCreek Road.

Several largehardwood trees were observed uprooted in a converging patternwithin a narrow ravine at the 1650 block of Hannan Trace Road.This damage extended northeastward out of the ravine and onto thenearby hillside where some damage to barns occurred from fallentrees. In addition, the roof and exterior walls of a wood framecommercial warehouse were blown off to the south of the pathalong Hannan Trace Road. Given the location of this particulardamage and orientation, this likely occurred from rear flankdowndraft winds. The exact start and end path to the tornado isunknown given the rural area with which it occurred and lack of aroad network within the theoretical damage track.
