ingredients

1 pound ground beef
2 medium onions, peeled and finely diced
1 teaspoon cayenne pepper
1 teaspoon dried oregano
1 teaspoon dried basil
1 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes
1 teaspoon chili powder
1 teaspoon garlic salt
1 teaspoon ground cumin
1 teaspoon salt
1 can (15 ounce size) tomato sauce
2 cups water
1 tablespoon prepared mustard

directions

Place the ground beef and onions in a large saucepan over medium-high heat. Cook, stirring frequently, until the beef is cooked. Drain off any excess grease.

Add the remaining ingredients to the saucepan. Mix well and bring to a simmer over medium-high heat. Reduce the heat to low and let simmer for 1-2 hours. The flavors will intensify the longer it cooks.

Remove from the heat and serve warm over hot dogs in buns. Store leftovers in a covered container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat before serving.

recipe tips

Serve the sauce on freshly grilled or steamed hot dogs.

Garnish the hot dogs with additional toppings like chopped onions or shredded cheese.

For a smoother sauce, consider blending the sauce with an immersion blender or in a food processor.

If the sauce becomes too thick, thin it with a little more water or tomato sauce.

Allow the sauce to cool before refrigerating.

Reheat the sauce gently on the stove or in the microwave, stirring occasionally.

common recipe questions

Can I use a different type of meat instead of ground beef?

Yes, you can use ground turkey or ground chicken for a lighter version. Or, use plant-based meat crumbles.

Is it really necessary to cook the sauce for 1-2 hours?

Cooking for this length of time allows the flavors to develop more fully, but you can reduce the cooking time if in a hurry. Also, refrigerating it overnight and reheating can also enhance the flavor.

Can I adjust the heat level?

Adjust the amount of cayenne pepper, red pepper flakes, and chili powder to taste.

What can I substitute for tomato sauce?

Tomato paste diluted with water or crushed tomatoes can be used as a substitute.

Could I make this sauce vegetarian?

You can use a meat substitute or increase the onions and add bell peppers for a vegetarian version and serve it over vegetarian hot dogs.

Can I freeze the leftover sauce?

Yes, it freezes well. Store in an airtight container and freeze for up to 3 months. For best results, thaw it overnight in the fridge then reheat on the stovetop or in the microwave.

How can I thicken the sauce if it's too thin?

Simmer the sauce longer (uncovered) to reduce and thicken it.

Can I make this sauce in a slow cooker?

Yes, after browning the meat and onions, transfer all ingredients to a slow cooker and cook on low for several hours.

Very delicious, & much healthier than the Hot Dog Sauces which we're used to making. Everything from the Mediterranean region (especially from Greece) is tastier & healthier. I used 90/10% ground sirloin, & it was still very tasty. I'll make this one from now on. Everyone loved it. Thanks :-)

Made this just like the recipe said, minus the second teaspoon of cayenne pepper. It's really good on a snowy day in Wisconsin. Two thumbs up!;-)

Doubled the recipe, slow simmered for approximately 3.5 hrs uncovered. Only mod was 3 finely diced jalapeños sauted with the onions. Delish, found my recipe.

I doubled this recipe for a large group but didn't end up with too much liquid as the other reviewer mentioned. I imagine that tripling it would take more time to reduce down the liquid so that was probably the issue. The seasonings were very good. We served this over all beef hot dogs on homemade buns (recipe also from this site)

I made this recipe for a large group so I used 15 for the serving size. There was WAY TOO MUCH liquid. Luckily, I had started the night before I needed it so I placed the entire pan in the refrigerator overnight. The next day I simmered uncovered on low for several hours to reduce the volume of liquid. The house smelled wonderful, the recipe reduced nicely and everyone who ate it loved the taste. Just build in the extra time to reduce the excess liquid and this is a great recipe.

Oh this is so close to the coney dogs in Michigan. The taste is sooooooo good. I tried many recipes until I found this one and no other will do now. Added a little less cayenne pepper.
